Viennale Film Festival 2026

Dates, tickets, cinemas, and what to watch.

A film can introduce you to a place through its people, language, and everyday life. During the Viennale, Vienna’s cinemas bring these perspectives together, with films from Austria and around the world.

For visitors, it is a chance to include a screening in an autumn trip and spend a few hours in one of the city’s established cinemas. You can choose a single film that interests you or plan several visits around the festival program.

What Is the Viennale?

The Viennale is the Vienna International Film Festival. Its program brings together feature films, documentaries, short films, and special programs exploring filmmakers and film history.

The 2026 selection includes a Robert Aldrich retrospective, alongside contemporary productions and events with visiting filmmakers. You can browse the program by category or use the festival’s Film Navigator to find a selection based on your interests.

When and Where Is Viennale 2026?

The festival takes place from October 22 to November 3, 2026, ticket sales begin on October 17 at 10 a.m., Vienna time, with screenings at five cinemas in Vienna’s first district.

The cinemas are part of the reason to visit. Gartenbaukino has a large screen and a long association with film premieres, while METRO occupies a former theater with balconies, stucco, and velvet interiors.

What to Watch at Viennale 2026

These four films caught my attention, with stories of Vienna, island life, exile, and a changing landscape.

Johann Lurf’s experimental film observes the Ottenstein reservoir in Lower Austria over 22 months, recording changes in light, time, and seasons. It will be projected in 70mm.

The opening gala at 7:30 p.m. is by invitation only. For visitors who want to see the film, the later screening at 9:30 p.m. is open to public ticket sales.

The film follows Al Cook as he faces losing his apartment in Vienna. His music and attachment to the city connect an artist’s portrait with the changes taking place around him.

It closes the festival on November 3 at Gartenbaukino, but the closing gala is by invitation only. Public screenings take place at other festival cinemas that evening — check screening times and venues.

For readers interested in travel and the question of where to make a home, Tristan Forever offers a different setting.

The film follows a former Parisian doctor who hopes to settle on Tristan da Cunha, a remote island community in the South Atlantic. Over a year, the community considers whether he can join them. The film combines documentary, fiction, and dream sequences.

The film explores the life of Palestinian intellectual Edward Said through family footage, television interviews, and lectures. It traces the experiences that shaped his political thinking and his role as a prominent voice for the Palestinian cause.

At its center are questions of exile, identity, and belonging. Said’s memories of his family home and his return to Jerusalem connect his personal experience with the longing for home shared by displaced people.

How to Choose a Screening

Start with a subject that interests you, then check the practical details:

  • Language and subtitles: Confirm both for the individual screening.
  • Running time: Leave enough time for the film and any announced discussion.
  • Venue: Allow travel time between cinemas.
  • Guest appearances: Look for filmmaker introductions or conversations.
  • Access: Check whether the event has public ticket sales or requires an invitation.

If you need help narrowing the selection, the Viennale Film Navigator asks a few questions and suggests films.

You can also download the Pocketguide and timetable. The downloadable editions are in German.

Talks, Music, and Events at Funkhaus Wien

The festival also has a program away from the cinema screen. In 2026, Funkhaus Wien becomes the Viennale Zentrale, hosting talks, concerts, and DJ nights.

One option is Jasmine Zhang’s live concert on October 23, from 9 p.m., followed by an open jam session. The event is listed with free entry.

Address: Argentinierstraße 30b, 1040 Vienna.

Check each event separately for admission details and times.

Including Viennale in a Vienna Trip

One screening can fit into an afternoon or evening after exploring the city. Choose your film first, then plan a meal or walk nearby so you do not have to rush across Vienna.
