October in Vienna brings film screenings, neighborhood celebrations, autumn walks, and a chance to visit some museums without paying admission. Here are my picks for this month, with the dates and details you need to plan a visit.

The Wiener Kaiser Wiesn continues until October 11, while Vienna Design Week runs until October 4. I covered both in my free things to do in Vienna in September guide, so you can find more about them there.

Event details can change, especially for outdoor programs. Check the official website shortly before your visit.

Celebrate 45 Years of WUK

October 3 · WUK, Währinger Straße 59 · Free admission

WUK celebrates its 45th birthday with a free event starting at noon. The former locomotive factory is now home to concerts, art, workshops, and community projects. The birthday celebration is a chance to visit the building and see more of what happens inside it.

Visit a Museum on the First Sunday of the Month

October 4 · Various locations · Free admission

The first Sunday of every month is a good day to explore Vienna’s smaller museums. On October 4, you can visit the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum and several Wien Museum locations without paying admission.

If you are interested in Vienna’s composers, consider the Beethoven Museum in Heiligenstadt or the Beethoven Pasqualatihaus near the Ring. Check the opening hours of your chosen museum before setting out; the free admission applies to participating locations, not every museum in Vienna.

Watch Young Filmmakers’ Work at Video & Filmtage

October 8–11 · WIENXTRA-Cinemagic at the Urania · Free admission

Vienna has a free film festival in October. Video & Filmtage screens short films made by young filmmakers, with fiction, documentary, animation, and experimental work in the program.

The screenings take place at Cinemagic in the Urania. You do not need a ticket or reservation, though I would arrive early for a screening you particularly want to see. The festival program lists the films and screening times.

Walk Part of the 12 Stunden LiDo Route

October 10, 8 am–8 pm · Floridsdorf and Donaustadt · Free, no registration

Despite the name, you do not have to walk for twelve hours. 12 Stunden LiDo follows a marked route through Vienna’s 21st and 22nd districts, passing places such as the Danube Island, Marchfeldkanal, and Bisamberg.

The complete circuit is around 50 kilometers, but there are twelve starting points. Join at one of them, collect a stamp card, and walk the section that suits you. It is an easy way to make an autumn outing out of a part of Vienna you may not have explored yet.

Bring Something to the re:pair Festival

October 2–18 · MuseumsQuartier · Free activities; check individual sessions

At the re:pair Festival, the focus is on keeping things in use. Its program includes clothing repair, upcycling, and practical workshops. Some sessions require registration, so check the details of anything you want to attend.

October 11 is a particularly useful day to visit: the festival plans free repairs for electrical appliances in the MQ’s Ovalhalle, checks and small repairs for musical instruments, and a large clothing swap. Before carrying an item across town, check the festival program for the rules and available places.

Go to the Kürbisfest in Margareten

October 22, 2–7 pm · Siebenbrunnenplatz · Free admission

On October 22, Siebenbrunnenplatz fills with pumpkins and autumn decorations for its Kürbisfest. There are activities for children, including pumpkin carving, and a torchlight procession toward Reumannhof begins at 5 pm. Back at the square, the evening ends with pumpkin soup.

It is a neighborhood celebration rather than a large city festival — a nice reason to spend an afternoon in Margareten.

Visit the Austrian National Library on National Day

October 26, 10 am–6 pm · Central Vienna · Free admission

Austria’s National Day is one of the best dates in October for a free cultural visit. The Austrian National Library is opening its State Hall (Prunksaal) and Papyrus Museum without an admission fee. The House of Austrian History (Haus der Geschichte Österreich) is also free that day.

The State Hall is the choice for anyone who wants to see the historic library itself. At the Papyrus Museum, you can explore objects from ancient Egypt; the organizer also lists short tours as part of the day’s program. See the National Library’s October 26 program before visiting.

There is more happening around the city on October 26. MAK offers free admission, the Architekturzentrum Wien has a free open day, and the Wiener Sicherheitsfest takes place on Rathausplatz on October 25 and 26. If you have time for only one or two stops, I would choose them before heading into the city: the free museum programs make this a popular day to go out.

If the objects from ancient Egypt leave you wanting to learn more, you’ll find stories and guides from my trip on my Egypt page.

Welcome, Fall

October brings a different mix of free things to do in Vienna. You can watch short films at the Urania, walk part of a route through Floridsdorf and Donaustadt, or visit a museum on the first Sunday of the month. Later, pumpkins take over Siebenbrunnenplatz, and several museums open their doors for free on Austria’s National Day.

If you have more time to explore, take a walk through the old town with my Vienna legends and myths, go on a lion hunt through the city, or start with my Vienna travel guide if this is your first visit.
